Do Kia vehicles require premium gas?

When you pull up to a gas pump, there are usually three options: Regular, mid-grade and premium. For most people, the first thing they notice is the stark price difference among the three. Does it make a difference? Do Kia vehicles require premium gas? The Spitzer Kia Cleveland Blog sat down with a few of our service experts to get current and future owners of Kia vehicles the most accurate and up-to-date information about their vehicles. Kia does its best to make its vehicles as affordable to own as possible, but some of this information can be hard to find or, at the very least, otherwise unclear. If you have any questions about how to best care for your Kia vehicle, please contact the Spitzer Kia Cleveland Service Department today.

What does “premium” gas mean?

Without getting too deep into the dense details of petrochemical engineering, premium-grade gasoline has higher levels of octane, which are chemicals to more tightly control when the fuel/air mixture is ignited to produce combustion. This is important to prevent engine knocking, which isn’t something to be terribly concerned about but could lead to problems down the road. Using high octane fuel is most important in a high-performance vehicle with high compression ratios making tons of horsepower and torque.

Is it bad if I don’t use premium gas?

Most new Kia cars and crossover SUVs in the Spitzer Kia Cleveland inventory need regular-grade fuel. The engines in these vehicles are equipped with fuel sensors to make subtle, unnoticed changes to the engine to extract the best possible performance and fuel economy. It’s more important for buyers to buy clean fuel from a reputable source than it is to pay attention to the amount of octane being used.

Are there any Kia vehicles that require premium fuel?

Given the relationship between premium fuel and performance, the Kia vehicle that is recommended to have premium gas in the tank is the 2018 Kia Stinger. Its twin-turbocharged, V-6 engine makes more than 360 horsepower and has a fairly high compression ratio. In order to get the most from the car, our recommendation is for customers to use premium gasoline.
